Attleboro, MA
downtown Attleboro Flood Mitigation Project
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Downtown Attleboro along the Ten Mile River has a history of flooding. Recent major storms in 2005, 2010, and 2023 showed just how vulnerable this area is, and it is projected that these extreme events will take place more often.
To find ways to reduce flood risk and increase resilience to future flooding, the City is developing a comprehensive Flood Mitigation and Resilience Plan for the downtown area. This plan will detail current conditions that contribute to flooding and what factors make flooding worse, assess the most vulnerable properties and structures within the downtown area, and evaluate potential actions for the City and property owners to reduce risk and build resilience to flooding. Recommendations will include both critical infrastructure upgrades and nature-based approaches, which are solutions using natural features, like wetlands or vegetation, to manage floodwaters, among other strategies.
Funding for this project is provided in part by a Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC) grant awarded to the City by FEMA, in cooperation with MEMA, along with matching funds from the City of Attleboro.
